AHI’s inaugural annual forum was held on Thursday 20 September, with a crowd of 150 on hand to hear about VAHI’s progress, achievements and upcoming priorities from CEO Dr Lance Emerson.

The event was opened with an address by Department of Health and Human Services Secretary, Kym Peake, who reflected on the challenges in delivering world class care to Victoria. In her address, Kym spoke of the important role that good information plays in supporting high quality and safe care, and reiterated her Department’s commitment to working with VAHI to help drive improvements where they are required.

Lance then made a presentation outlining VAHI’s drive for a change in focus in health service reporting and information provision, from accountability and scrutiny to shared responsibility. VAHI’s Agency Advisory Committee Chair, David Plunkett spoke about the role of information in supporting a culture of speaking up within health services. David reflected on his own experiences as CEO of Eastern Health and explained that a culture of speaking up is ‘critical in facilitating quality and safety improvements.’

Dr Norman Swan, the host of ABC Radio National’s Health Report delivered an engaging and entertaining keynote address ‘Using data to drive quality and safety improvement: from darkness to daylight’, which challenged the audience to consider what focus Victoria should be taking, and where investment and energy is best placed.

The keynote address was followed by an energetic panel discussion, where panel members shared their perspectives on how the quality and safety improvement agenda is best taken forward. Feedback on the event has been very positive, and we look forward to delivering more events that bring partners and stakeholders together to discuss and debate this important topic.
